Decision 2008

Part V

Well here it is the end of August, time flies when you’re having fun. Yesterday was the first day of the Democrat National Convention in Denver. Woo Hoo, we’re having fun now!

My first impression as I watched the proceedings was, “Which convention is this?” It seemed that George Bush and John McCain were mention almost as many times as Barack Obama. But then the Dem’s still think they are running against W. and it makes their kook base happy.

Nancy Pelosi was uninspiring. The (former) Republican for Obama, Jim Leach was stiff, wooden and uninspiring. A little later in the evening they wheeled out Jimmy Carter to parade around the stage but he did not speak. The highlight of the evening was the appearance and speech by Teddy Kennedy. He looked well and sounded just like he always has and pledged to be back on the Senate floor in January. We wish him well in his fight with cancer.

The most ant-climactic moment of the night was Michelle Obama’s presentation. It was widely known that her appearance was designed to re-brand her. And to be fair it was that. She showed up with a conservative hair style and a conservative long blue dress and was preceded by a film narrated by her mother and an introduction by her brother. Her speech was all about doing away with her “angry black woman” persona. The whole production was slick, stylish and totally unbelievable given what we know about her. All in all the presentation unfolded as the Huxtable’s meet Father Knows Best.

The eight hundred pound gorilla in the room is of course Hillary Clinton. There has been much discussion on what she and her supporters are going to do and what effect it will have on the party, the campaign and the election. Tuesday night we will get a glimpse of where it is all heading as Hillary takes the stage.

Stay tuned.
